Holland’s codes, in plain language

RIASEC is a hexagon of neighboring interests. Most lives stand on a border.

John Holland’s Making Vocational Choices (1997) sorts work environments and people into six types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. The famous picture is a hexagon. Types that sit next to each other blend more easily than types that sit across from each other. A person is rarely one letter.

We do not print a three-letter code on the poster. The hexagon is a background grammar. Making and repair lean Realistic. Research leans Investigative. Studios and stories lean Artistic. Teaching and care lean Social. The lines on your map are local, between your stations, rather than a slogan about your type.

The practical use is the border. If two of your interests are neighbors on Holland’s hexagon, a job that uses both is easier to picture. If they sit far apart, the week may need a real split: a job for one, a serious practice for the other. That is a design problem, not a character flaw.
