Field note

Archives and private history

Other people’s papers, and the smaller archive of your own attention.

An archive, in the professional sense, is a responsibility to records you did not create. Appraisal, order, access, and the duty to say what you threw away. Orlean’s library book is about a public version of that duty. The career pages for archivists and special-collections librarians are about the job.

People are also drawn to archives because their own past feels unfinished: family papers, a town, a school. That draw belongs on the map as history, memoir, or oral history. It is not the same skill as processing a collection, and it can be the reason you would be good at it, or the reason you would find the job too raw.

Keep the two straight when you read your chart. Love of the past is a station. The willingness to serve someone else’s past, on their terms, is the vocation.
