Field note

Books that hold two fields

A short shelf for people whose interests refuse to stay in one aisle.

A few books earn their place because they were written from an overlap, not about the idea of overlap. Matthew Crawford’s Shop Class as Soulcraft moves between philosophy and the repair shop. Rebecca Solnit’s Wanderlust moves between walking and political history. Susan Orlean’s The Library Book is a fire, a city, and a public room.

On the research side, Ibarra’s Working Identity, Holland’s Making Vocational Choices, Savickas’s Career Counseling, and Hidi and Renninger’s 2006 paper are the ones we actually use when we draw. They disagree with each other in useful ways. Holland wants types. Savickas wants a story. Hidi and Renninger want a phase.

Read one that matches a bridge on your own chart. Then do the peripheral task the book implies. The shelf is a door, and doors are for going through.
