Field note
Career construction, briefly
Savickas asks for the story under the jobs. We ask for the stations under the story.
Career construction theory, as Mark Savickas develops it, treats counseling as a way of hearing the plot a person is already using. The Career Construction Interview asks about role models, magazines, a favorite story, a saying, and early recollections. The counselor listens for a life theme.
Your Calling Compass is not a counseling session. We do not ask you to narrate a memory from age six while someone takes notes. We ask for interests, practices, places, and a few private lines, and we draft a theme you can reject. The kinship is the question, not the method.
If the through-line sounds like a theme you have heard in your own head for years, good. If it sounds like a stranger’s poster, trust yourself. Savickas’s point was never that the expert owns the story. The person does.
