Circumscription and compromise

Linda Gottfredson on the fields people rule out before they choose.

Linda Gottfredson’s theory of circumscription and compromise, laid out in the Journal of Counseling Psychology (1981) and refined later, says people narrow the zone of acceptable work long before they pick a job. They rule out occupations that conflict with their sense of sex type, then prestige, then their sense of their own ability. What remains is a zone. Inside the zone they compromise when the market does not offer the ideal.

An Interest Map does not know your zone. It knows what you were willing to type into a form. That is already a circumscribed list. The interesting question is which stations you almost left off because they seemed unserious, too male, too female, too low-status, or too late.

Compromise is not failure. It is the ordinary gap between a chart and a rent payment. The map’s job is to keep the ruled-out station visible so the compromise stays a choice you can see, rather than a fact about your personality.
