Dark horse careers

Rose and Ogas on people who standardized poorly and still built a life.

Dark Horse (Todd Rose and Ogi Ogas, 2018) studies people whose paths look irregular from the outside and coherent from the inside. The book’s claim is that fulfillment, in their sample, came from knowing what engaged them and from letting the route stay specific, rather than from climbing a standard ladder.

We cite it carefully. A single popular study is not a labor market. Many dark-horse stories are told after they worked. The part worth keeping is the method: pay attention to the conditions of your attention. When do you lose track of the hour? What kind of problem makes you stay?

An Interest Map is a way of writing those conditions down so they can be compared. Irregular is fine. Unexamined is how people accept a ladder they never chose.
