Field note

Place is part of the vocation

Some interests are about a ground, not a subject. Scannell, Gifford, Solnit.

Leila Scannell and Robert Gifford’s review of place attachment (Journal of Environmental Psychology, 2010) gathers the evidence that people bond to places for practical reasons and for identity. The bond predicts what they will protect and where they will try to stay. It is not a mood you can sprinkle on any city.

Rebecca Solnit’s Wanderlust treats walking as a way people have thought. On an Interest Map, walking cities, coasts, archives, and small towns are sometimes the real subject, and the “career” is whatever lets you stay in contact with that ground. A geography post, a ranger season, a local paper, a conservation crew.

If your chart’s strongest cluster is places, do not translate it too quickly into a portable skill. Ask which ground you are willing to serve, and what work that ground actually hires.
