Field note
When interests pull apart
Some pairs share a Tuesday. Some pairs need a negotiated week.
Holland’s hexagon is blunt about this. Neighboring types can live in one role. Opposite types often cannot, without one of them going hungry. A social, teaching week and a solitary, investigative week can both be yours and still wreck each other if you pretend they are one job.
The map shows the pull as a long bridge or as two clusters with a thin label. Thin is honest. You do not have to fuse them. Give the larger cluster the job, if you need a job, and give the other a protected practice with a time on the calendar. Ibarra’s experiments can test whether the split is tolerable before you reorganize a life around it.
Pain here is sometimes Gottfredson’s compromise: you ruled a field out, and the remaining one is respectable and dull. Put the ruled-out station back on the chart, even if you never monetize it. Visibility is the first repair.
